Do you know what pets should avoid and what to do should you experience an exposure?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Common Pet Toxins<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Pets are pretty curious, and they often explore their surroundings with their mouths. This can put them at risk of encountering potentially harmful substances in their daily environment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Protecting your pets from common pet toxins starts with knowing what things could pose a danger. Some of the top pet poisons to look out for include:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Chocolate\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rodenticides\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Over the counter medications like Tylenol, anti-inflammatories, and vitamins<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/consumers\/consumer-updates\/paws-xylitol-its-dangerous-dogs\">Xylitol<\/a> (found in sugar-free gum and some foods)\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Grapes and raisins\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prescription medications, especially antidepressants and stimulant medications<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Essential oils and household cleaners<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspca.org\/news\/which-lilies-are-toxic-pets\">Lilies<\/a> (cats)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Flea and tick medications for dogs (cats)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Other common pet toxins include nicotine, marijuana, chocolate, recreational drugs, and overdoses of pet medications.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In particular, spring pet dangers include items like fertilizers, slug baits, flower bulbs, household cleaners, and weed killers<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tips to Prevent Pet Poisoning&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It may be impossible to protect your pet from every potential hazard, proactive action can significantly reduce the risk of pet poison exposure.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Store with care<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014 Keep foods, medications, and chemicals out of reach from curious pets. Be sure doors and lids are pet proof as well.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Check labels<\/strong> \u2014 Check for toxic ingredients like xylitol in food, medications, or treats. This includes any human food that you might share with your pet, either intentionally or accidentally.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Keep trash secure<\/strong> \u2014 Make sure garbage cans are pet-proof to prevent access to harmful items. Keeping them behind a closed door is often safest.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Know your plants<\/strong> \u2014 When bringing plants into your home, make sure to identify what they are and confirm that they\u2019re non-toxic to pets.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Educate houseguests<\/strong> \u2014 Remind visitors to store items like coats, purses, or luggage containing potential toxins out of your pet\u2019s reach. Items like medications, vapes, and sugar-free gum can pose a significant threat.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Use essential oils with caution<\/strong> \u2014 Refrain from applying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspca.org\/news\/essentials-essential-oils-around-pets\">essential oils<\/a> to your pet and ensure proper ventilation when using them.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Clean carefully<\/strong> \u2014 Be sure cleaning agents and other chemicals dry completely before letting your pet access the area. When possible choose non-toxic alternatives for household and yard products.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Don\u2019t medicate on your own<\/strong> \u2014 Never give your pet human medications without <a href=\"https:\/\/www.petdominion.com\/get-in-touch\/\">asking us first<\/a>!
