Dog with toothbrushRegular professional veterinary dental care including cleaning is important to maintaining your pet’s teeth. Even with regular tooth brushing most pets will need to have some professional dental care throughout their lives. Here at Pet Dominion in Rockville, MD we use modern and safe ultrasonic scalers to clean each tooth thoroughly – above and below the gum line. We polish teeth to create a smooth, lustrous tooth surface more resistant to plaque buildup. In most cases we recommend a product called OraVet, a plaque prevention gel that is applied at home, for use between dental cleanings. Included in each dental cleaning is a set of full mouth digital x-rays that help us evaluate the health of the tooth roots below the gum line.

Unlike most people, dogs and cats don’t open wide and say ‘AAHHH’, at least not for long. For this reason your pet is maintained under general anesthesia for their dentistry procedure. As with all of our anesthetic cases your pet will be monitored closely by our trained anesthetists and top of the line multi-parameter monitors (ECG, blood pressure, SPO2, CO2, respirations, and temperature). They are administered IV fluids throughout the procedure and are recovered in our warm ICU. Your pet can go home the very same day with newly clean teeth and fresh breath.
